Pharmaceutical Laboratory Automation

The author holds graduate degrees in Business and Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy NY and is employed by Pfizer Global Research and Development in Groton, CT. He started working at Pfizer nearly ten years ago for Christopher Lipinski (best known for his discovery of the Rule of 5) in what was the Physical Measurements Laboratory. Presently he works for Franco Lombardo in the Molecular Properties Group (MPG) in Exploratory Medicinal Services (EMS), constructing assays and automating measurements for parameters such as ElogD, pKa, Solubility, and Stability.

His undergraduate work was done at The University of Rhode Island, where he received a degree in Electrical Engineering and worked as a co-op student at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC). Prior to working at Pfizer he accepted a full time job on site at NUWC working on projects ranging from digital design on the New Sonar Intercept System (NSIS) to analog preamplifier testing and fabrication for towed arrays.

He is a product of Endicott, NY known as "Home of the Square Deal" to locals. The idea of the "Square Deal" came from George F. Johnson's philosophy of "a fair day's work for a fair day's wage.” It was George F. Johnson who started Endicott Johnson Corporation in the 1890’s as a shoe manufacturing company. In 1906 a new company, Bundy Manufacturing (a.k.a. International Time Recording Company), broke ground in Endicott. At the time many locals considered those who chose to work at Bundy Manufacturing fools if they had the opportunity to work at Endicott Johnson. Today however, the world knows Bundy as International Business Machines, but few are aware that IBM started in Endicott.

Among his favorite pastimes are playing softball on a company team,  rollerblading (his favorite trail is from South Beach to Oak Bluffs in Martha’s Vineyard, MA), and mountain biking. In the winter he is a competitive shooter on the Pfizer Pistol Team and also collects handguns. He is an avid reader and enjoys books from authors such as Victor Davis Hanson, Harold Kushner, and Ann Coulter. He likes cats and especially saddened by the fact that many species of wild cats are disappearing from the face of the earth. Only 5 sub species of tigers are left in the wild due to poaching and habitat destruction.
